Mount Merapi

An Indonesian volcano began erupting October 26 causing more than 200,000 people to seek shelter. In the past two weeks 138 lives have been lost and sanitation is now becoming an issue in emergency shelters. The city of Yogyakarta lies 20 miles from Mt. Merapi and is under close surveillance because the Code River flows directly into its heart. As we learned in class this becomes a conduit for volcanic mudflows called Lahars. Indonesia, lying on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' makes it very prone to earthquake and volcanic activity.

  1. I really enjoyed this video because I think it made more surreal on how these Indonesian residents are truly suffering. Since there have already been 138 deaths, and now they are worried about sanitation in these emergency shelters, this is becoming a more server problem then it was before. It’s hard enough as it is to receive aid in a volcanic disaster because of the problems that come with the delivery of the aid. We learned in class the "golden hours" are the first couple hours after the event actually took place, therefore it's almost impossible to have aid that quickly after a disaster like this. Hopefully this volcanic activity will lessen soon.
